The Superior Labor - Engineer Petite Bag
This gusseted bag provides plenty of room to store your favorite stationery and writing instruments that inspire you in your daily life. The heavyweight canvas is flexible and sturdy, meant to last a lifetime, while staying lightweight, and the painted bottom provides a bit of extra sturdiness and waterproofing to the bottom of the bag. Compact yet practical, it reflects The Superior Labor’s enduring focus on purposeful design and everyday functionality.
Crafted from domestically produced No. 4 canvas, the bag is prized for its durability and the way it gradually softens with use. The metal fittings are cast at a foundry in downtown Tokyo, and the leather trim is domestically sourced and vegetable-tanned with tannins extracted from mimosa bark, allowing it to acquire a rich patina over time. From sewing and edge painting to washing and final assembly, each step is completed carefully by hand, resulting in a thoughtfully constructed piece designed to age beautifully alongside its owner.
Because each bag is individually hand crafted from organic leather, canvas, and brass rivets, no two cases are the same. There will be individual differences in the color, thickness, and texture of the leather varying from bag to bag.

Kawai considers The Superior Labor as a natural extension of his experience working with cars, crafting leather goods, traveling, and curating vintage wares. All of The Superior Labor’s design and manufacturing takes place in a former elementary school campus in the rural and mountainous area of Kaga-gun, Okayama Prefecture, where Kawai lives and works. Called “nap village,” it welcomes visitors to come and experience The Superior Labor’s living and crafting philosophy while exploring the wonderful nature of Mount Hongu.
